Techspert Tip of the Week: Red Eye

We've all had it happen to us: you snap a photo and instead of the person's eyes being their natural color, they appear bright red. What causes this, and how can we eliminate it?

Red eyes are caused when the flash on your camera goes off, enters your subject's eyes, and is reflected back out. The retina in your eye has lots of melanin in it, a substance that's dark red in color.

Many new cameras have a feature called red eye reduction; it attempts to reduce red eye by initiating the flash a few times before actually capturing the picture. The multiple flashes cause the pupil to contract, thus limiting the amount of light (redness) that's reflected back out.

So here's my tip of the week to you all. If you have a red eye reduction feature on your camera, turn it off. Yes, turn it off. Why? A few reasons...

1) It doesn't always work. The feature on your camera is called "red eye REDUCTION" not "red eye ELIMINATION." But you'll always be able to remove it using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

2) It's annoying and confusing for those getting their photo taken. I think we've all had this happen to us. We get together for a group shot, the flash goes off, everyone starts to move, then the camera flashes a few more times. At that point, half of the group has walked away, some can't see because of all the flashes, a person or two is probably asking "how many flashes is it?" Whew, what a mess! With red eye reduction off, the camera will only flash once, making it easy for everyone. If you do happen to get red eyes in your photo, you can always eliminate it quickly and easily using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

3) It's a huge drain on your battery. Besides the LCD screen, the flash is the biggest drain on your  camera's battery. So every time you take a photo with red eye reduction on, the camera may flash as many as 6 times, meaning 6 less pictures that you can take before your battery dies.

Windows Live Photo Gallery makes eliminating red eye a quick and easy process. To use it, simply open Windows Live Photo Gallery, double click the photo with red eye, click the "Fix" button, and then click  "Red Eye" on the right hand side of the screen. Now, move your cursor and click and drag around the affected eye, making a box around it - just do one at a time. Release the mouse button and voila! The red eye is gone, leaving the natural eye color to show through.

I hope you found this week's tip informative. For all of you about to board the Oosterdam, I offer a class covering this topic, as well as other photo improvement tips, called Put Your Best Face Forward 1. Hope to see you soon!
